Most of us have learned NOT to give OUR OWN favorite books to friends and relatives, since they may not share the same enthusiasm for topics which inspire us.
However, since the health evangelist abides (old English word) strong in me – and just in case anyone asks – the list that follows includes a few favorite authors who have written books which influenced me and hundreds of thousands of readers to adopt positive lifestyle changes.
I do not practice 100% adherence to information contained in the following selections.
However, their dietary and/or exercise suggestions made sense and were easy enough to follow, such that their promised rewards have come my way and are worth sharing.
You will find direct links to the websites of these authors in the brief descriptions below.
- The writings of Dr. Joel Fuhrman, whom I first discovered on PBS Television. Applying principles from Dr. Fuhrman’s original Eat To Live book, led to my losing 40 pounds of excess fat, which had accumulated during high stress, care-managing years.
- Retired attorney, Chris Crowley’s, Younger Next Year series of books, written in conjunction with doctors and professionals in their respective categories, humorously and scientifically emphasize the need for and benefits of exercise.
- National Geographic journalist Dan Buettner’s Blue Zones books. The Blue Zones describe five locations in the world with the healthiest, long lived people: Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece, and Loma Linda, California. The Blue Zones books identify common characteristics, eating patterns and lifestyle practices shared by individuals in these locations.
- And finally, here are three ideas from a list of Fit or Fat Top 25 Fitness Tips from Covert Bailey, who wrote Fit or Fat in 1978. Covert Bailey now is retired. His former associate Ronda Gates’ website contains references to his work.
“1. Exercise. If exercise were a pill, it would be the most widely prescribed medicine in the world.
2. Eat a balanced diet, lower in fat, lower in sugar and higher in fiber.
3. Diets don’t work. Exercise is the bottom line behavior for weight management.”
