Most of us have heard of Body Mass Index – BMI – the indicator of a person’s healthy weight as measured by a height and weight multiplier. Only thing is that BMI does not inform us of potential heart disease risk, which can be based on where fat sits on our body, e.g. “apple shape” bodies.
An alternative to BMI measurement is WHtR – or Waist to Height Ratio. Pull out a tape measure from the drawer and measure your waist (halfway between top of your hip bones and lowest ribs.) A good starting point is to aim for a waist that is 50% or lower than your height. For example a 5 ft. 4 in. woman (64 inches) would want her waist to be 32 inches or less. Happy measuring. WF!
