WHERE ARE YOU?

Let’s rephrase our question to Where Are We on the Functional Aging Continuum, which is the ability to move well in chosen exercise and wellness activities, including being able to perform daily tasks at home, at work or in sports.

The Functional Aging Institute’s1 Hierarchy of Functional Aging model, shown in this week’s graphic, gives us insight into the various degrees of activity and capacity in which we may find ourselves – and possibly be able to modify through lifestyle behaviors.

The Functional Aging Institute (FAI) created this model to categorize physical function among older adults. It is an expansion of Dr. Waneen Wyrick Spirduso’s original model, published in 1995 in Physical Dimensions of Aging (Human Kinetics).

None of us is exclusively in one Functional Aging category or the other.

Underlying our functional capabilities model are Six Domains of Physical Function:

Balance.
Mobility.
Cognitive/Emotional.
Neuromuscular.
Musculoskeletal.
Cardioresperitory.

Each one of us may vary in strength and abilities in any of these domains.

The good news is that until it absolutely is too late, we can improve or maintain functional capacity.

The key is to become aware of the Functional Aging Continuum and constantly ask ourselves:

Where am I today in my ability to Live, Laugh and Love?

What kind of physical movement – exercise in all its wonderful forms – will allow me to participate in life more fully?

How can I enhance caring by sharing my best gifts and knowledge with others?

Where is my joy?

Then Go For It.
WF!
