VIRTUOUS CIRCLE

When introduced to the ScienceDirect1 article The exercise–cognition relationship: A virtuous circle, the infrequently used word “virtuous” caught my eye.

From ScienceDirect: The exercise-cognition relationship: A virtuous circle.

A quick Merriam Webster online search led me to “virtuous” definition #3 which included the words potent and efficacious.

Now we had something…(a) Potent: having great power, influence, or effect. (b) Efficacious: successful in producing a desired or intended result.

The elusive silver bullet solution for maintaining rigorous exercise on a consistent basis was right in front of me in the ScienceDirect1 article and graphic, shown above: A Feedback Loop!

The more we put our mind to exercising, and the more we do, the more we are able to do – plus stick with it – while feeling and thinking better about exercise and anything else we encounter!

In its own words the …the Virtuous Circle article’s Highlights are summarized below.

  • Practicing effortful exercises requires planning and inhibiting temptation to stop.
  • Regular practice of exercise leads to an enhancement of concentration and willpower.
  • A high capacity to concentrate facilitates the adherence to healthy behaviors.
  • A virtuous circle dynamically links exercise and the capacity to engage mental effort.”

We still have the caveat, the warning, regarding illness or injury when beginning exercise or upping movement intensity.
1. Obtain clearance from your doctor.
2. Start where you are.
3. Progress at slow enough pace for your body to adapt.
4. Stop if you feel pain. Post-exercise, 24 to 36 hours later, there is something called DOMS – delayed onset muscle soreness – that’s okay. DOMS demonstrates you actually moved your muscles with results-generating effort.

A sign on the wall of my patio WildFire!’s Gym contains an A.L. Williams quote that keeps me going . . .

“I’M NOT TELLING YOU IT’S GOING TO BE EASY. I’M TELLING YOU IT’S GOING TO BE WORTH IT. WF!
