Even a slight swayback with protuberant stomach (depending on the amount of abdominal fat) can surprise us when we notice it while walking by the mirror.
Returning to Dr. Vladimir Janda – (for a reminder click here) – today we introduce Dr. Janda’s muscle imbalance Lower-crossed syndrome, shown in our model below.
(Hmm… Isn’t this the same gentleman from last week?)
Continuous sitting is one of the leading causes of Lower-crossed syndrome because in prolonged sitting we crunch (tighten) the hip flexor muscle complex and stretch (weaken) the opposite gluteal muscles. Adding insult to injury – leaning back while sitting stretches (softens) the abdominals and tightens lower back muscles, often contributing to low-back pain.
One correction for lower-crossed sagging back and upper-crossed rounded upper back syndrome is doing the bird dog stretch-strengthen exercise (from the floor or standing.)
Another corrective movement/sensation is to stand as though we’re being held in string puppet posture, which straightens and loosens us at the same time. Just dangle like Howdy Doody, feeling the main string holding us up from the top of our head.
Or for fun, sensuality and good form…how about if we join (click on) Kermit the Frog in one of this week’s Zumba Gold classes?
