About 10 o’clock one morning the Righteous Brothers song hummed in my mind.
Was I singing of some past or future lover? No…
Warm feelings surged through me because I was cutting in half my favorite daily Food For Life sprouted grain English Muffin for inserting into the toaster.
Once crunchy brown, the chewy delectable would be smothered with creamy almond butter and paired with a protein/fruit/unsweetened soy milk smoothie – making it a true champion’s breakfast for me.
When sons Joe and Josh were young, I would bake similar, mouth full, whole grain breads full of nuts and seeds.
Such fare was not well-received.
The kids called it “bird seed bread” and longed for visits to Grandma’s (my Mom’s) house where they dependably could eat white bread to their heart’s content.
Memory tells me that the offending, non-nutritious, bleached flour offering was called “Wonder” or “Sunbeam” bread.
I complained to Mother that she was feeding them junk food. She never stopped.
Joe and Josh were raised in an austere, single parent household in which I mainly was studying, working and adhering to healthy dietary practices.
Now I understand that Grandma knew the growing-up boys needed their own version of soul and heart’s inspiration.
It readily was found on those spongy white slices in her open-arms kitchen. WF!
You’re my soul and my heart’s inspiration
You’re all I got to get me by
You’re my soul and my heart’s inspiration
Without you, baby, what good am I?
