OPPORTUNITY COST

One of the most useful concepts I learned while sitting in an economics class at San Diego State (SDSU) were the words “Opportunity Cost.”

The Opportunity Cost approach to decisions has guided me through many health and fitness choices.

One of Google’s definitions for the phrase is “Opportunity cost is the value of the next-best alternative when a decision is made; it’s what is given up,”

Opportunity Cost defines why Fitness Isn’t Free.

That’s OK – Because no Investment in anything of Value is Free.

1. Choosing to Exercise, perhaps even a walk around the block, means we give up TIME for some other pleasurable sedentary pursuit such as reading, playing cards, watching favorite TV programs or engaging in online pursuits.

Exercise choices strongly influence how we spend important non-career hours for those still in the workforce.

Or what about investing life-affirming social time with family and friends?
(If possible, can we walk and talk together while sharing that precious time?)

2. Opportunity Cost permeates almost every nutritional choice we make in today’s heavily processed food world.

What easy-to-consume addictive sugary, salty or trans-fat laden morsels do we refuse in order to consume nutritionally rich green leafy vegetables?

What about the cost of leaving the table just a little bit hungry, rather than reaching full satiety if we are trying to shed a few pounds?

How grateful we are for understanding Opportunity Cost.

Knowing that every little decision means giving up something else SETS US FREE to do right by ourselves, and others in our orb.

Opportunity Cost underpins Free Will – Our Greatest Human Gift. WF!
