As part of October’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month the color pink saturates TV athletic events and activities designed to raise money for research and awareness regarding breast cancer. The one critical fact we hear little about, though, is how we can prevent breast cancer through lifestyle choices.
Yes, women need to be aware of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutated genes. From the American Cancer Society website we learn that about 5% to 10% of breast cancer cases are thought to be hereditary, meaning that they result directly from gene defects (called mutations) inherited from a parent. http://www.cancer.org/cancer/breastcancer/detailedguide/breast-cancer-risk-factors
The remaining 90% of us can pay attention to the National Institutes of Health and other research that declare proper diet, exercise, and weight control are among factors that may prevent breast (and other) cancer. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_148946.html
For the rest of October let’s place a pink ribbon beside the piled high servings of fresh fruits and vegetables we eat with every meal.
To our Long, Healthy and Joyous Life – WF!
