How does leaping toward immortality translate into a favorite afternoon snack?
First let’s give credit for our paraphrased blog title to American poet John Updike’s line…”Cheese is milk’s leap towards immortality.”
Except scientific research counters immortality and says Extreme Obesity Shaves Years Off Life Expectancy.
Happy Coincidence this week for Milk’s Big Leap when on September 20, 2024, NATIONAL STRING CHEESE DAY is celebrated.
Why does String Cheese matter?
As someone who at one point had a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 33, selective eating is critical for not re-gaining excess fat.
Since obesity can impact the Vibrant Longevity to which we aspire, I look for nutrient dense foods which deliver the most bang for the buck in terms of protein, and/or plant phytochemicals, fiber, vitamins/minerals and satiety – that feeling of being full.
My favorite mid-afternoon snack has become one stick of “lite” part skim string cheese, which averages 60 calories per stick, and includes 3 grams of fat and 8 grams of protein.
If “lite” cheese isn’t available at the store, with good conscience I’ll purchase regular string cheese with 80 calories per stick, including 6 grams of fat and 6 grams of protein. (Fat and protein grams may vary depending on the type of cheese.)
Yes, cheese sticks contain sodium, and the fat is saturated:
1. However, my Health Coach brain limits personal sodium intake to not more than 1500 milligrams a day.
2. This same brain tells me it’s OK to consume a few saturated fat grams, plus multiple unsaturated healthy fat grams – such as those found in avocados and olive oil.
That way I am limiting fat grams (nine calories per gram) to approximately 25% percent of daily diet. My body ends up feeling happy, healthy and full enough.1
Solution has been found for the mid-afternoon Hungries.
Next time we crave a snack, let’s raise a Cheese Stick, take a bite and contentedly chew on our contribution to immortality. WF!
