GORGEOUS BY ANY NAME

This week we give a nod to National Gorgeous Grandma Day which happens on July 23, 2023.

We celebrate the end of stereotypical attitudes regarding women’s health and fitness, purpose and longevity when including the word “Gorgeous” in describing Grandmas or any women over age 50.

From the NationalToday website…here is a description of how National Gorgeous Grandma Day originated:

Alice Solomon graduated at the age of 50 from Wellesley College in 1984. She realized that society saw her and other women of her age as senior citizens, regardless of whether or not they were actual ‘grandmothers.’ Determined to challenge this thinking, she came up with the idea of ‘Gorgeous Grandma.’
Women who were apparently ‘beyond their expiration date’ and no longer relevant are termed as ‘grandmas,’ so Solomon decided to embrace the term, but amped it up with the use of the word ‘gorgeous.’ Gorgeous Grandma is all about presenting an edgier image of older women and eliminating stereotypes confining them in a limited box.”

Although a few of us might stay home to bake cookies, the great happiness is in how many other choices we have with our lives.

Community exercise, literary groups, pursuing technology updates, advanced medical benefits, longevity affirming diet and nutrition practices, choosing to work as long as health and mental capacity permit – all allow us the freedom to enjoy aging as we see fit.

Definitions for Gorgeous include “beautiful, very attractive, spectacular, splendid, superb, wonderful, grand, impressive, awe-inspiring…”

Happy Gorgeous Grandma Day to the majority. of our readers – whether or not you have grandchildren.
