September is when apples, malus domestica, attract our attention and appreciation. Apples beckon us, crisp and shiny, from grocery store aisles.
The phrase “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” pops to mind.
Google tells us that Pectin, a fiber found in apples and other fruits, is used to make medicine. People use pectin for high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and to prevent colon cancer and prostate cancer. It is also used for diabetes and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
The Healthline website gives us ten other reasons that eating an apple today would be a good idea.
The “good apple” for this post, though, was found through author, Helen Hunt Jackson, who wrote the September poem in our graphic above.
Helen Hunt Jackson gave us our health and fitness direction for today in advice to her friend, Emily Dickinson, who was reluctant to publish poems that would brighten mind and heart of millions of future readers.
“It is cruel and wrong to your ‘day & generation’ that you will not give them light…I do not think we have a right to withhold from the world a word or a thought any more than a deed, which might help a single soul”
Now we have today’s “good apple” marching orders.
We don’t hold back. We share word, thought and deed – our gift – which would help any single soul next to us. WF!
