GETTING A GRIP

Perhaps our rock climber has a stronger grip than most of us need for every day use.

Yet medical research states that a powerful grip can serve as a biomarker, a measurable indicator, of long life in women and men.1

No need to read further if you do manual labor, or live and work on a farm – both are lifestyles which make for strong hands!

Given that these posts mainly are about attaining Vibrant Longevity, here are a few suggestions for improving our grip:

  • WRING OUT a Hand Towel: Soak a 20×30 inch hand towel in water, grab the ends with each hand and strongly twist a few times first in one direction, then the other.

  • DO Farmer Carries: If you don’t have at least 10 lb dumbbells, grab a couple cloth grocery bags and put cans of beans/soup, etc. in them until you feel some heft – as though you are exiting the grocery store with full bags.
Then walk at least 10 paces, with a narrow step, first holding only one bag in alternate hands each direction, then do a second trip where you are holding both bags, one in each hand.

  • BUY Hand Grips, small rubber balls, etc.: Have these items around for squeezing whenever you watch TV.

  • STRENGTH TRAIN regularly: Pushing, pulling and lifting weights naturally requires grip and wrist strength. Hands and forearms get stronger by default.

Soon the nearest rock climbing wall will call our name. We can answer… “I’ve got a grip now. Time to scale up.” WF!
