Before exiting August National Wellness Month it seemed a good idea to share my favorite two Bodyweight exercises with you.
These moves come from far away regions of the globe and in their simplest form require no equipment.
Each can be done with modifications to suite one’s fitness level. Shared in this post are the Yoga Sun Salutation and Turkish Get-up, which require and develop full body strength and mobility as a person progresses to their purest form.
Disclaimer: Please exercise standard cautions and only proceed according to your ability.
Slight variations can be found in the Yoga Sun Salutation according to the form of yoga (hatha, ashtanga, etc.) that one is practicing. Basic exercises, called postures are shown in today’s main graphic. The moves are done in flowing sequence. Youtube has any number of videos on both of these movement forms. View with caution because some exercises might be done just for videographic effect.
The personal benefit I receive from Sun Salutations is how they wake-up my body, warm it up, strengthen it and improve morning circulation. Sun Salutations have been my friend for over 30 years.
I only discovered the Turkish Get-up about five years ago. This exercise was a revelation in introducing me to true core bodyweight strength!
The woman in our Turkish Get-up image is using a kettlebell – used to develop strength since Roman times – for this secondary phase of the Get-up.
However, one should not use any weight when first learning the Turkish Get-up.
From a facing up lying down position, one raises the arm, then lifts the mid-body, to a kneeling position, then stands up. To finish the move reverse the position until lying down.
This Strong First Youtube video is a professionally done weighted Turkish Get-up in its perfect form. DO NOT ATTEMPT.
My own version of a Turkish Get-up absolutely works the whole body using no kettlebell or weight of any kind.
Why do even modified Sun Salutations and Turkish Get-ups?
Primary answer: The ability to move our own bodyweight empowers and sets us physically free. WF!
