DAILY BREAD

The prayer phrase…”Give us this day our daily bread,” serves as appropriate lead-in to this week’s October 24th, National Food Day celebration, which was established by the 50+ year old Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) in 2011.

According to the online National Day Calendar® – the nationwide CSPI October 24, “celebration of healthy, affordable, and sustainably produced food is a grassroots campaign for better food policies.

  1. I am extremely grateful to CSPI for its advocacy with other organizations in helping to develop the Nutritional Labeling and Education Act (NLEA,) which gave the FDA authority to require “Nutrition Facts” nutrition labeling on foods regulated by the agency.

I always read Nutrition Facts when purchasing packaged, frozen or canned goods. There is no question that their information helps me make healthier food choices.

2. Our next consideration is affordable food as we discuss National Food Day.

Without doubt the majority of us are noticing increases in the price of our groceries. In my case…A mid-week $40 stop for groceries for one person now adds up to $48 – $50.

Let’s Pay the Price, without complaint, for nutrient-dense, abundant variety of fruit, vegetable and protein sources in well-stocked grocery stores – giving up some other amenity if necessary.

Eventually inflation will run its course, or macro-economic adjustment will be made, such that we can absorb higher prices.

If we have any say in minimizing food desert neighborhoods, let’s speak up.

Personal and community health depend upon our implementing National Food Day practices throughout the year.

Raise the glass in toast.

Nutritious, Delicious, Affordable, Sustainable Food is Health, Joy and Life for All. Salud. WF!
