Last Saturday evening, for the first time in months, I felt a chill in the air. The seasonal clock said…”Autumn is showing up exactly on time.”
The Fall months are Great News for the “hate to exercise in the heat” folk among us.
The air feels crisp. We feel like moving forever. Where to start?
- Begin an every-other-day leaf raking habit, even if the gardener does his/her share.
- Pick a somewhat hilly walking path and try it out three days a week for three weeks.
- Try beach sand-walking, or walk on a pier, filling our lungs with sea air. The ocean’s negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain, giving us a feel-good boost.
- How about one-arm, one-leg standing jumping jacks? That is if the joints no longer let us do a real jumping jack.
- Head to apple country and walk around, finishing up with a small piece of apple pie. I’m thinking of Julian, CA for this treat.
- Try Tai Chi, Flow Yoga, Essentrics® Aging Backwards or some other moving stretch class to free up our joints for the onset of colder days.
- Walk in our favorite park. Notice the changing leaves and which plants seem to be in final bloom.
- Plant tulip bulbs as promise for the coming Spring.
- Enjoy a cup of spicy (cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, cardamon, anise, cloves, nutmeg) chai tea as reward for exercising in the cool, cool of the day. WF!
