This week we review a term that improves the lives of age 45+ individuals. It’s called “BDNF” or brain-derived neurotrophic factor.
Quoting directly from my favorite fitness writer, Pete McCall…”There is plenty of research showing that exercise stimulates a neurotransmitter (chemicals which help the central nervous system do its job) called BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) which creates new brain cells and improves brain function.
BDNF has been called “the miracle-gro” of the brain (by researcher and MD John Ratey, author of the book: Spark). Exercise can increase BDNF production and improve the ability to process information for hours after exercise.
In addition, exercise improves oxygen and nutrient flow throughout the entire body, including to the brain, which can improve cognitive ability and reduce the risk of developing onset dementia or similar diseases.“
The book Spark, on page 43 of my iPad Kindle, then disclosed that Education, Self-Efficacy1 and Exercise were the three factors shared by those with the least cognitive decline over a four year period.
How excellent to know that BDNF – activated by our practice of the three E’s above, can be our BFF, Best Friend Forever. WF!
- Self-efficacy is a person’s particular set of beliefs that determine how well one can execute a plan of action in prospective situations. (Found on Google.)
