July was recognized as National Watermelon Month – but today, August 3, 2015, has been designated by food.com1 as National Watermelon Day. Why has watermelon earned attention two months in a row?
According to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, watermelon packs a powerful lycopene punch. Scientists have found that lycopene, the red pigment occurring naturally in certain plants, in the diet correlates with reduced incidence of certain types of cancer. As well, lycopene levels in fat tissue—an indicator of lycopene consumption—have been linked with reduced risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack).2
As we savor some juicy watermelon today, let’s take a step beyond science and agree with author Mark Twain… “When one has tasted watermelon, he knows what the angels eat.” WF!
