When I read the quote shown in the paragraph below our picture, today’s topic was going to be about Healthspan, the quality of a person’s longevity.
“When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength cannot fight, wealth becomes useless, and intelligence cannot be applied.” ― Herophilus.
The above quote was found in a blog post by Dr. Michael Hunter to which I subscribe via the Medium website.
After reading the Herophilus quote, though, I realized that much of my personal Healhspan is due to My Friends – the writings and Lifestyle practices of other humans through time.
Here are a few favorites – some of which you may have read in previous posts in this column:
1. There is no tomorrow – Apollo Creed to Rocky Balboa in the movie Rocky III.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper – Adelle Davis.
3. Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;” – Book of Genesis, King James Bible.
4. In seniors after 65 years old, a low-calorie but nutritious and high protein diet (1 g of proteins per kg) would favor a loss of excess fat and the maintenance of muscle mass and bone density. – Professor Valter Longo Facebook page and other sources regarding need for more protein to prevent sarcopenia, muscle loss due to aging.
5. We Do Not Stop Exercising because we grow old. We Grow Old Because We Stop Exercising. – Dr Kenneth Cooper.
6. There are only two things you need to do everyday to stay healthy: Eat Right and Move Your Body. – – Dr Kenneth Cooper.
7. Most people, when they reach a certain age, let down and talk about what they used to do. Well, who gives a damn about what you used to do? It’s what you’re doing now. – Jack LaLanne.
In fact, the inspiration for attributing Healthspan to My Friends came from came from other famous quotes – this from the song made famous by the Beatles and Joe Cocker.
8. Let’s finalize our suggestions with how important music, dancing, singing and camaraderie can be for a happy, healthy, long-lived life.
Be Well. WF!
… What would you think if I sang out of tune?
Would you stand up and walk out on me?
Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song
And I’ll try not to sing out of key… Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm, I get high with a little help from my friends
Mm, gonna try with a little help from my friends… What do I do when my love is away?
Does it worry you to be alone?
How do I feel by the end of the day?
Are you sad because you’re on your own?… No, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm, get high with a little help from my friends
Mm, gonna try with a little help from my friends
