At the beginning of my Friday, 1:30 p.m., Essentrics® Aging Backwards classes at the Seal Beach Senior Center, students often hear me say…”Less Is More” when describing how to move through the flowing stretch and strengthening exercises unique to Essentrics®.
“Less Is More” makes sense because movement that initially feels good can be overdone.
In order to be able to keep coming back to class, we want to stay on the “Not-quite-there” side of the twinge in knee or shoulder during movement.
Ease, grace and flexibility will come as we let the body find its way.
Just beginning any basic cardio, strength or mobility bodywork will start to pry open the stiffness Box that lack of exercise encloses around us.
We can liken our exercise program to the Pareto Principle – an observation by Vilfredo Pareto in the early 1900’s that 80% of results/outcome comes from 20% of effort/input.
A similar way of looking at movement is the slang question…What gives me the biggest bang for my buck?”
Even more fundamental was the phrase written on a wall of one of the first gyms I attended…”Half The Battle Was Getting Here.”
Every day is a new start to feeling good.
Ask…”What little thing can I do today to free up my body – to make it strong, lean, lithe and limber?
“OK. I’ll do that – just for a little bit, for a few moments – one breath, one step, one calorie at a time. WF!
