GROWTH

We like to think that fitness goals or any other projects will result in upward progress and straight-line personal growth.

Growth and Going to the Dogs?

However, as today’s graphic demonstrates, growth happens more or less along a moving, sometimes uncertain line.

Often we may feel that life is offering bumps in the road – obstacles – to keep us from accomplishing even well-intentioned growth goals.

An example of one of these obstacles was when, over the weekend, I could not figure out how to activate the customized heart rate plug-in to my new Hydrow® Wave indoor rowing machine.

Setting up the heart rate monitor simply was a step toward accomplishing the larger health and fitness goal of improving my cardiovascular fitness, aerobic endurance and overall strength – three of rowing’s wellness benefits.

Mine, or anyone’s, growth and goals obstacles, such as hooking up new-tech electronics, could be described as “going to the dogs” – or canines (caninae) to be more precise.

We look to canine sayings from the past – of foxes and wolves – to identify problem, then solution, for growth and goal accomplishment.

The first quote is an Old Testament Bible verse in Song of Solomon, chapter 2, about the problem of “Little foxes spoiling the vines.”

It’s not big things that hinder us, but the gnarly mini-obstacles (little foxes) that interfere with accomplishing what we consider really important work.

Seeing my heart rate on the screen was Not as Important as Doing the Actual Work of Rowing.
Besides, my Apple Watch gives heart rate and I know hands-on physical ways to take my pulse.
So the foxes got away with “spoiling” my Sunday workout time.

Afterward, via Google, the ancient Roman philosopher Seneca sent me (us) a solution to Change Attitude and overcome the little foxes that stand in the way of personal growth.

“Throw Me to the Wolves and I will Return Leading the Pack.” – Seneca

Enough said about how to grow in our goals. WF!
