SKINNY RAT

December’s first post is not related to that well-known line of James Cagney, one of our grandparents favorite actors, when he said…”You dirty… rat” in the movie Taxi.

Our blog is based on skinny, healthy rats – made famous by Dr. Roy Walford, a gerontologist whose longevity research showed that a low-calorie diet could prolong life and increase vitality.

As stated in a 2004, New York Times article upon Dr. Walford’s passing from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease,
“…although not the first to suggest that cutting back on calories and body weight could lengthen life, Dr. Walford is often credited with doing the research that gave the idea credence….

In studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, dating to the 1960’s, Dr. Walford found that restricting caloric intake in laboratory mice by about 50 percent could more than double their normal life span. He then carried the research over to humans, showing that a low-calorie diet could result in beneficial changes in blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol…”

Arduous, overly strict Calorie Restriction may not be necessary to longevity and “health span,” according to accumulated research.

In fact, it may not be considered advisable according to The Journal of Nutrition’s 90th Anniversary Commentary: Caloric Restriction Effects on Aging, which describes individuals and researchers, including Dr. Walford, whose focus over the years was on restricting food intake.

One of my connections to Dr. Roy Walford is a cover story from the November 25, 2002, Los Angeles Times, entitled Eating Less for Longevity.

I clipped out that article and posted it above my kitchen counter while living in San Diego.

Now yellowed and frayed, that same Eating Less for Longevity headline is taped in my Seal Beach kitchen as a daily reminder that cutting back on portions will keep me frisky and sashaying through whatever Life asks of me.

Viewed through the longevity lens, Eating Less becomes reward, rather than dietary deprivation.

Hail to Dr. Roy and his Skinny Rats. WF!
