PLAYING HOOKY

Yesterday instead of doing my usual Sunday activities of studying and writing, I skipped work to play pool.
Uh-oh! Was it dereliction of duty or having a good time through healthy living?

Thank you, Kim Nichols, League Operator, Orange County APA, for this Facebook photo.

My Orange County, CA, American Poolplayers Association (APA) pool playing team qualified in the Spring of 2020, prior to the pandemic, to compete in Saturday/Sunday Regional Finals, which would send the top two teams to the APA 8-Ball World Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Those World Championships now are rescheduled for October, 2021. The catch-up Orange County playoffs were held this last weekend.

My team made it to Sunday’s Final Four – then lost. Each player won $31.25 as a semi-finalist; Not the $125 each if we had been one of Orange County’s top two teams; Nor the $3125 each if we were to win overall in Vegas.

Love of the game needs to come way before money!

Playing hooky in this fashion somewhat corresponds with healthy living.

1. When in the heat of competition it feels as though your heart is beating twice its normal pace.

2. The day requires a lot of stamina. We stand around for hours, waiting for multiple teams to play.

3. Healthy eating choices come to the forefront. Bar food leans toward fried, greasy and over-salted.

4. Camaraderie and connection develop through team bonding, eliminating sad and lonely feelings.

5. The game requires strategic thinking, good for cognitive development and retention.

6. One is forced to live in the absolute present moment, abandoning past or future wandering thoughts.

“Making the shot,” as it’s called, requires pinpoint attention, physical dexterity and superb hand-eye coordination.

Thank you for sharing memories of my hooky day with me: Even if it resulted in no Las Vegas trip this October.

Next year maybe we can sing “Hey, Baby, Let’s Go To Vegas.” WF!
