POSTURE PERFECT – Vitality #99

I took a class on Sunday which focused on maintaining good posture. Particularly we talked about benefits of a “neutral spine.” Except for the belly button part – our picture below is “Spot” on for maintaining the erect stance which leads to people asking what we do to look so young.

In order to obtain a neutral spine our one adjustment to the picture would be to brace the whole trunk (front and back from below shoulders to mid-thigh.)  Pretend a corset is holding everything in. Then let’s hold that position and greet the world with confidence. WF!

WHEN THIRSTY – Vitality #98

While out on the patio last night, I saw that my pothos plant’s leaves looked wilted. “Water,” I thought. “They need water – just like our soul sometimes needs replenishment.”

So on days when our spirit may feel a little dry, let’s find a quiet place, take whatever long draughts of peace we need, then be on with the task ahead. WF!

BIG TACO – Vitality #97

from blog.2shopper website

Are you planning to enjoy a taco tomorrow – since October 4th is National Taco Day?

The taco has become ubiquitous (found everywhere) throughout much of the USA. The University of Kentucky even features a taco literacy class .

My favorite taco recipe is that of a taco salad. The splurge version starts with a sprouted corn tortilla. Place the heated, puffy tortilla into a 2 quart salad bowl and add 1/2 15 oz. can of organic black beans warmed and spiced with ground cumin and Mrs. Dash Onion and Herb salt-free seasoning blend. Then pile on pre-washed mixed salad greens, chopped red or green cabbage, sliced red onion, tomatoes, avocado, a few olive bits and handful of fresh cilantro. Final touch is a drizzle of “lite” ranch dressing. Total meal under 400 calories. Flavor…Fantástico. WF!

DEBATE – Vitality #96

It is reason, and not passion, which must guide our deliberations, guide our debate, and guide our decision. Congresswoman Barbara Jordan

The Congresswoman’s quote wasn’t about tonight’s Presidential Candidates debate…rather it speaks to the voice in our head that says choose healthy living. On with our daily self debate, then – “to exercise or not” – and let wellness win. WF!

HERITAGE – Vitality #95

Image from Civil Service Employees website

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

Those of us who met at a Zumba Gold® class definitely appreciate health enhancing Latin rhythms of cumbia, salsa and bachata. Or for spice in our life…we could add some capsaicin – pimientos picantes (hot peppers) – to a favorite Spanish dish. Or this month we could Google Latin dance classes, and after a few lessons, find ourselves dancing late at night in some cantina1 of questionable origin. WF!

1In rural Mexico, a cantina traditionally is a kind of bar frequented by males for drinking alcohol and eating botanas (appetizers)…Some cantinas explicitly prohibit entrance to dogs and men in police or military uniform…In many areas it is still viewed as scandalous for proper ladies to be seen visiting a genuine cantina. TANGIBLE – Vitality #94

What makes joy tangible?* Often it takes simple action…a touch, tending to something, watering a rose. Maybe it means taking a walk, drawing a thank you card or appreciating our home by cleaning it.

Amazing what happens to our mood when action takes over. WF!

*Tangible: 1. capable of being touched; discernible by the touch; material or substantial. 2. real or actual, rather than imaginary or visionary: the tangible benefits of sunshine.

WORKING THANKS – Vitality #93

Sheila K Fox

The gift of work is life giving for workers and recipients of their labor. It doesn’t matter where, when, how and why we work.

I really am thankful for my web consultant and social media specialist, Sheila K. Fox, who fixed the bug that kept my Monday Morning Vitality Tip from going out last week. Sheila never fails to respond when I email her with a business software problem.

Throughout today let’s make sure to say “Happy Labor Day” to every one whose work blesses us. WF!

GROWING NEW – Vitality #92

The good thing about trying something new – particularly a challenging activity – is in how we grow through the attempt.

In researching for today’s blog post I found the GreatDay (click on link) website by Ralph Marston, which features a daily motivational quote which you might want to receive. Let’s agree with Mr. Marston and make choices today that improve our tomorrow.

My growth activity yesterday was to enroll in an all-day Strong by Zumba® training. Maximum effort. Phenomenal tomorrows on the way. WF!

We enjoyed a Housewarming for my new Seal Beach, CA, home yesterday afternoon.

George Washington Plate

George Washington Plate on doily crocheted by my Mother

In downsizing for the move from San Diego, I almost had given away my Mother’s good china. Dad gave her the Homer-Laughlin 22k gold set for their 10th wedding anniversary in 1950. My sister and I would cheer when the “George Washington” plates came out for special occasions.

Returning to yesterday’s Housewarming…our conversation was rich with stories old and new – while the heritage china sat in silent witness of love handed down. WF!

OLYMPIC RED? – Vitality #90

Hopefully you are enjoying the 2016 Summer Olympics. Champion athletes inspire our appreciation of exquisite physical prowess. Rio-2016-Logo

How about if we say Thank You to the mighty click here Mitochondria within athletes’ and our muscles? Mitochondria are known as the energy power house of the body’s cells. Exercise fuels our mitochondrial cells just like an athlete.

As we jump up and down cheering on our favorite Olympian this week, give a nod to your own body and say “Yep. A mitochondria champion lives in me.” WF!
